Borough Market Viaduct
As part of the £3.55bn Thameslink Programme Network Rail are to construct a new viaduct in Borough. The railway line through Borough Viaduct is a notorious capacity bottleneck and a new viaduct across the market is a key element of the Thameslink scheme.
Following on from our success in 3d modelling and BoQ production in RIB format for the Thameslink Outer Area Stations Haleys (in conjunction with Privica Ltd) were requested by Network Rail to undertake a commission on the Borough Viaduct Project to produce a 3d Model of the new structures required for the project, quantify the new structures and produce a budget cost estimate for new structures for the project.
The inputs used to generate the model were 2d drawings and specifications. The process is then as follows:
- Link Network Rail RIB WBS to 3d Modelling Software
- Create 3d Objects
- Establish the way in which data is to be classified CAF etc.
- Build 3d Model
- Associate objects and WBS items
- Generate listing of quantities and import into the RIB QTO
- Build cost estimate within RIB
- Generate cost plan according to CAF structure for future budgeting and early stage GRIP
The resulting outputs included a CESMM3 based Bill of Quantities (RIB WBS format) of the new works, a budget cost estimate, 3d sections and views and two rendered views per structure.

Haleys as part of the final report also produced a risk register and undertook time and cost risk calculations using @ Risk software. A draft construction programme was also produced in Microsoft Project.
The final report was delivered to Network Rail on time and on budget and was very well received.
The benefits of using this process include auto measurement of quantities from 3d models, more efficient, visually auditable, easily updated to reflect change, 3d/2d Images and drawings directly from the model, fast accurate sections, identification and elimination of co-ordination problems and integration with other systems e.g. Estimating/Planning/CAD/FM.
